The Premier League is now the most attractive league for players. Every transfer window, many players who have been successful in other leagues ultimately choose to move to the Premier League but sometimes the waters become too deep for them. The Premier League is known for its high intensity, physical play, and rapid pace, which can be challenging for players accustomed to different styles. For some players it takes them time to adjust this kind of play. Timo Werner – After his move to Chelsea, he faced difficulties adjusting to the physical demands of the league compared to the Bundesliga. A lot of scrutiny was mounted on him. The play style was different and the attention on the team was high.
The Premier League features a variety of tactical approaches that can vary significantly from match to match, making it challenging for new players to adapt. Today you see another style and the next fixture features a completely different scenario.
Florian Witz has found himself in a similar situation. After transferring to Liverpool, he has struggled to find form and consistency under different tactical setups compared to his time at Bayer Leverkusen. So far he has scored only 4 goals and offered 2 assists in 23 appearances which is dismal compared to his last season in the Bundesliga where he was a force with 10 goals and 14 assists. The 22 year-old midfielder is yet to be at his best. Another issue is that, the spotlight in the Premier League is intense, and players can feel overwhelming pressure to perform, which may affect their confidence. Let’s look at Viktor Gyokeres. He was a star at Sporting netting 39 goals and 6 assists in 33 Portugal league games. After moving to Arsenal, he is struggling with the pressures of living up to his transfer fee and expectations compared to his successful run at Sporting. He has a record of a mere 6 league goals in 22 appearances with critics questioning whether he was a worthy purchase. There are several other reasons like the demanding nature of the league can lead to injuries, which disrupt a player’s ability to settle and perform consistently. There’s a subconscious perception that only success in the Premier League constitutes true success. However, most players generally underperform in their first season, leading to doubts about being a ‘flop’. I think everyone deserves an opportunity to settle in and adjust but one would be on their own if we accord them the chance and still fail.
