Hey Zekey Footballation
Following Zimbabwe’s defeat to Lesotho in the final matchday of the World Cup qualifiers, it became evident that the dismissal of coach Michael Nees was imminent. He officially took the helm on July 30, 2024, as appointed by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), tasked with leading the “Warriors” through the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup qualifiers, where Zimbabwe ultimately finished at the bottom of Group C. This brings us to the pressing question: who will succeed Nees? Will it be Kaitano Tembo?
Norman Mapeza has had numerous coaching tenures, both as a caretaker and in a full-time capacity, making him one of the most frequently chosen managers. Sunday Chidzambwa stands out as a prominent figure, having led the team through multiple AFCON qualifications during his various terms. Following Nees’ appointment, many Zimbabwean Warriors fans expressed their discontent, with a notable preference for local coaches over foreign ones.

The list of past coaches includes Pasuwa (2015–2017), Mapeza (2017), Mutekede (2017), Chidzambwa (2017–2019), Antipas (2019–2020), Logarušić (2020–2021), Mapeza (2021–22), Mutekede (2022), Murape (2022–2023), Chidzambwa (2023), Brito (2023–2024), Mapeza (2024), Tapera (2024), and Nees (2024-2025).

The Warriors face significant challenges, particularly with limited training time and a reliance on foreign-based players. To cultivate a robust team, there should be a concentrated effort to tap into local talent, enhance team dynamics, and address the disparity in player performance between club and national levels. With the Africa Cup of Nations just a month away, ZIFA and the coaching staff must act swiftly to identify local talent, improve communication, and foster a sense of national pride.
It is noteworthy to mention that having a dedicated stadium could have altered the team’s fortunes. Under difficult circumstances, Nees managed to lead the team to qualification, even if the situation was less than ideal. While I believe Calisto Pasuwa would be the most fitting replacement, he currently holds a contract with the Malawi national team.

In a recent announcement, ZIFA confirmed the immediate termination of Michael Nees’ contract, marking a sudden conclusion to his brief and tumultuous tenure with the Warriors. The Executive Committee expressed gratitude for his contributions to Zimbabwean football. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening technical development programs and ensuring progress across all aspects of the game, in alignment with their reform agenda.
Nees’ departure follows a disappointing performance, as the Warriors were unable to secure a single victory during this year’s World Cup qualifiers. Over his 16 matches in charge, Nees recorded only two wins, both against Namibia in last year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Although his contract was originally set to expire in December, ZIFA opted for an early release. The association has assured fans that interim coaching appointments will be announced shortly, emphasizing their dedication to enhancing Zimbabwean football. Further updates regarding the transition process and interim arrangements will be provided in due course.
