Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to restrict the size of state delegations on foreign trips, in an effort to curb government spending amid the economic challenges faced by Nigerians due to recent reforms.
This decision follows public criticism when Nigeria registered over 1,400 delegates for the COP28 climate summit in Dubai last month. Similar complaints were raised on some trips to China.
President Tinubu’s spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale revealed that moving forward no more than 20 individuals will be permitted to accompany the president on foreign visits. Similar limitations will also be imposed on other politicians.

Ngelale emphasized the president’s commitment to aligning government officials’ prudence with the efficiency expected of Nigerian citizens.
Tinubu, who assumed office last year, has embarked on an ambitious reform agenda aimed at attracting investment and addressing economic challenges. His reforms include ending fuel subsidies, lifting currency restrictions, and fostering economic growth.
Despite facing criticism due to rising fuel and food prices and a depreciating currency, Tinubu assured the public that the adverse effects are temporary and will ultimately benefit the country in the long term.
Netizens reacted positively to the news comparing Tinubu to Buhari.
