The CRH3 EMU is a high-speed EMU ordered by the Ministry of Railways of China. It adopts electric traction AC transmission. It is composed of 4 tractors, 4 tractors and 8 vehicles, and each traction unit is composed of two tractors and one tractor. The Ministry of Railways of China has named all China Railway High Speed (CRH) vehicles that have introduced foreign technology and jointly designed and produced them “Harmony”. The CRH3A EMU is designed based on the CRH380BL technology platform and has an operating speed of 250 kilometers per hour. It can operate at two speed levels of 160-200 kilometers per hour and 250 kilometers per hour according to the needs of different lines. The CRH3C EMU is a 4-motor and 4-trailer unit, with a maximum operating speed of 350 kilometers per hour.
The localization process of CRH3 EMUs is also very interesting. Initially, when China’s Ministry of Railways introduced high-speed EMU technology, it signed a cooperation agreement with Germany’s Siemens. Siemens won an order for 60 high-speed trains with a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, which were eventually designated as CRH3C. However, the Ministry of Railways of China also realized the importance of localization, so it cooperated with China CNR Tangshan Rail Coach Co., Ltd. to achieve localized production of CRH3 EMUs. The first domestically produced CRH3C EMU was tested on June 24, 2008, and reached a top speed of 394.3 kilometers per hour. This was also the world’s highest speed record for operating high-speed railways at that time!
