8th March was International Women’s Day.
As part of commemorating International Women’s Day, President Lazarus Chakwira joined Malawi Human Rights Commission at Capital Hill to launch a website and compendium that profiles women, as a way of positioning them suitably to potential employers or professional associates.

President Chakwira;
To break the bias, as per this year’s theme for the day, it is incumbent upon us to make available all the necessary information that puts to light the accomplishments of women in our society.
Malawi does not lack women leaders at all stages of social strata. As such, I am delighted that the women in the compendium will be a great resource to our developmental agenda as a nation.
My government will be first to utilise the platform in allocating opportunities to deserving women. I call upon other institutions to follow suit.
Later in the day, I summoned to the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), officials from Ministries of Lands, Transport and Public Works, Home Land Security, Education and Office of Accountant General to establish why there is a delay in completing various projects under their jurisdiction.
These include construction of 10,000 Security Institutions Houses, three Teachers Training Colleges in Rumphi, Mchinji and Chikwawa, 14 primary schools in urban areas, 29 girls’ hostels, science laboratories and library blocks.
I have demanded better coordination and enforceable timelines to ensure that these are concluded within given timeframes.

International Women’s Day is observed annually on 8 March. International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. It is a day, observed by many countries around the world, on which women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
